Sleepless Nights
Solo exhibition by Andrew Tarlow
Curated by Kimia Ferdowsi Kline.
On view: April 12 - May 5, 2018
Referencing its namesake, this body of work was largely created during the liminal space of sleeping and waking, in the stolen hours of night. The paintings seamlessly combine figuration and abstraction, uncommitted to one or the other, illustrating that these pictoral modes are not mutually exclusive. Drawing heavily on personal experience, Tarlow’s paintings are psychological narratives constructed from strategies of synthesis and recombination, intuition and play. Like a page pulled from a journal, the final pieces read as visual collages, weaving together text, graphic elements, and painterly marks.
